about

Michael: 'I've got a complicated soft spot for this song. It’s pretty and winsome, with a lovely lilting melody, and the version that always comes to mind is the Bing Crosby one, which is campily reminiscent of all those Westerns that I absorbed in childhood. But the other thing about it is that it’s a paean to the American dream of landscape, and there's an interesting conflict in that. Potentially, the song is either a horribly unironic plea for lebensraum, or an anthem for the sort of ecological agenda pursued by 'The Monkey Wrench Gang.' So I played it sweet and straight, and imagined how it would sound if heard juxtaposed in sickly counterpoint to a sequence of stock newsreel, depicting the camouflage-clad tribulations of early 21st Century imperialism-in-crisis. Alternatively, you can think of it this way: I sat down, George pressed 'record,' and I played it. Then I went home."
